Garda - Culture
On the slopes of the Rocca stands the parish church, which dates back to the eighteenth century, from the church you can head towards the eastern gateway to Garda, where you can find the church of Santo Stefano, which houses a sixteenth century painting depicting the Martyrdom of St. Stephan. Over the eastern gateway soars a sixteenth century building dominated by a tower, which stretches down towards the lake with a loggia and a belvedere. Moving towards the harbour you can find the fourteenth century gothic-Venetian style Palazzo dei Capitani, or Captains’ Palace, reaching the old town centre, which still bears the marks of its fishing history, if you head towards the San Giovanni harbour you will find Palazzo Fregoso. Villa Bacelli – Alberini stands just outside the old town centre whilst on the way towards Torri del Benaco, just before Punta San Vigilio you can find Villa Carlotti - Canossa, this was the home of Gabriele d’Annunzio, and bore witness to his troubled love for marquis Alessandra di Rudinì. Garda’s Rupestrian inscriptions are definitely worth a visit, especially those concentrated around Torri del Benaco, but you can also find some important examples in San Vigilio.
